Staying in Osaka vs Kyoto: Which One Is Better?
Ahh, the grand question for first-timers visiting Japan… Which iconic city should you stay in: Osaka or Kyoto?
As a nomad and repeat visitor to both cities, I can truthfully offer my first-hand opinion that one is not better than the other, only more suitable depending on your travel style, interests, and preferences!
Truthfully, both cities are incredible in their own right, and you wouldn’t regret staying in either.
However, both are so different that it DOES make a difference when choosing where to stay.

If you choose Osaka, you’ll be immersed in a vibrant, artsy city renowned for its street food and nightlife.
In contrast, if you opt to stay in Kyoto, you’ll be immersed in a historic, cultural city renowned for its temples and gardens.
Both have gorgeous neighborhoods and places to stay, plenty of activities that no tourist could ever completely check off, and food that will have you drooling for months on end.

Why Choose Osaka Over Kyoto?

Osaka gets the cold shoulder when it comes to choosing where to stay between it or Kyoto.
But I think the tides will turn as more people linger in this urban artist’s palette—for multiple reasons.
Osaka is “Japan’s kitchen” and is probably best known for its street food scene.
If you’re an adventurous eater, you will love Osaka’s food markets.
While Kyoto has its own Nishiki Food Market, Osaka remains the #1 choice for its cuisine.
Other than food, though, what is there to do in Osaka? Is it worth basing here or just visiting for one to two days?
I spent weeks staying in Osaka and really enjoyed my time discovering a lesser-known side to the city. But even if you just have one day in Osaka, you’ll still cover a lot of ground.
You’ll see as you walk around that Osaka feels more artsy, grungey, and laid-back than Tokyo, for example, which feels more professional and timeless.
I have always felt at ease and welcome here, too; as a solo traveler, Osaka has great capsule hotels and hostels that are budget-friendly and safe.
Osaka might be the better base if you’re seeking a mixture of experiences: food, culture, temples/shrines, and day trips to Nara and Kobe.
As a digital nomad, I prefer to stay in Osaka for its variety.
Pros of Staying in Osaka
More affordable accommodation: Osaka has a larger selection of budget-friendly capsule hotels and hostels compared to Kyoto, which has more luxury townhouses and ryokans.
Best for food lovers: Dotonbori is a paradise for street food and nightlife, and Osaka’s cuisine scene is world-famous.
Lively nightlife: If you enjoy bars, izakayas, and karaoke, Osaka’s Namba and Umeda districts are best for that. Plus, did you know that karaoke was invented in neighboring Kobe?
Better transport connectivity: Osaka is a major transportation hub, making day trips easy with train connections. It also is ideal for starting/ending a trip in Japan as you can fly out of two airports.
Universal Studios Japan: If you want to spend a full day exploring Super Nintendo World, this is a major reason to stay in Osaka as it’s so much nicer to return to your hotel here than travel all the way back to Kyoto.

Cons of Staying in Osaka
Less traditional atmosphere: Osaka doesn’t have the same Edo-era atmosphere as Kyoto, which is so distinct and quintessentially Japan.
More chaotic: It’s louder and busier, which may not be ideal if you’re looking for a down-to-earth city to base in.
Best Areas to Stay in Osaka:
- Namba/Dotonbori – Central location, nightlife, food scene
- Umeda – Shopping, business district, well-connected
- Shinsekai – Nostalgic, older part of the city with Showa-era vibes
When I stayed in Osaka for a few weeks, I went against the current and chose to stay outside the city center, in northern Osaka (in Jūsō) and on a separate trip, in Kujo.
And I have no regrets!
I’ve also stayed in Osaka’s Dotonbori/Namba area in this cute capsule hotel and found it perfect for exploring the area solo.
Why Choose to Stay in Kyoto Over Osaka?

Now, as much as I love raving about Osaka, Kyoto has quite the beefy résumé.
First and foremost, Kyoto, as you may know, is the cultural heart of Japan.
So, you can expect your stay here to be filled with visits to centuries-old temples, beautiful gardens, and traditional tea houses!
With just a few days basing in Kyoto, you can leisurely experience kimono tea ceremonies, stroll temples and Shinto shrines, learn about Samurai history (and even take a tour to slice tatami with a real katana sword), bamboo groves, zen gardens, and more.
Plus, if you want to experience staying in a traditional ryokan, Kyoto (between the two options) is the place to do it.
In sum, if you want to immerse yourself in Japan’s culture, art, and history, pick Kyoto as your base and explore Osaka in 1-2 days instead.
Pros of Staying in Kyoto
Traditional cultural experience: Stay close to famous temples like Kinkaku-ji, Fushimi Inari, and Gion’s geisha district.
Scenic and calm: Kyoto’s charming streets, bamboo forests, and riversides are beautiful to experience at sunrise and sunset.
Perfect for history and photography: Every corner of Kyoto is picturesque and filled with insanely good photo-ops.
Ryokan stays: You can experience staying in authentic Japanese inns with tatami mats, futons, and onsen (hot springs) in a ryokan. (You can experience this elsewhere, as in Hakone.)

Cons of Staying in Kyoto
More expensive: Kyoto’s hotels and ryokans are pricier year-round, but especially sell out around spring and fall for cherry blossoms and fall foliage.
Transport limitations: Kyoto relies more on buses than trains, which can be inconvenient at times. Even though the buses are easy, I always found it much longer and complicated to get across the city than in Osaka.
Quieter nightlife: While there are bars and izakayas in Gion, Kyoto is not a city known for its late-night scene. If you want to party or go clubbing, definitely opt for Osaka.
Best Areas to Stay in Kyoto:
- Gion/Higashiyama – Historic atmosphere, near major temples
- Downtown Kyoto – Best for shopping, dining, and nightlife
- Arashiyama – Scenic and peaceful, near bamboo forests
As for hotel and ryokan recommendations, virtually anywhere in the heart of Kyoto will be wonderful.
While I didn’t stay in a ryokan in Kyoto, I did stay in a 90-year old Japanese townhouse (machiya), called Higurashi-sou which was lovely and located nearby Nijo Castle and cute, local sentos (public bathhouses).
As a solo female traveler, I’ve also stayed multiple times at Len Kyoto Kawamarachi and LOVED it there. It’s such a vibe!
Can You Stay in One and Visit the Other?
Most people will opt to stay in either Osaka or Kyoto and then visit the other on a day trip.
Shin-Osaka Station and Kyoto Station are only about 25 minutes apart by Shinkansen (bullet train) or 45 minutes by regular train.
If you want a balance of both modern and traditional Japan, you can split your stay between the two cities.
I would recommend choosing your base city (e.g., Kyoto or vice versa) and staying there for 3-4 nights and then choosing your second choice and staying for minimum 2 nights.
Final Verdict: Which Should You Choose, Osaka or Kyoto?
- Stay in Osaka if you enjoy a bustling, artsy urban scene with amazing street food, partying/nightlife, and maximizing your wallet.
- Choose Kyoto if you want to immerse yourself in Japanese history, culture, and stay overnight in a ryokan.
- Split your time if you want the best of both worlds!
Whichever city you choose, I promise you won’t be disappointed. Most tourists will opt for Kyoto and then give Osaka a quick weekend visit, but I would argue in Osaka’s favor if you want to experience Osaka on and off the beaten path.
Let me know which city you end up choosing!

Hi Bri,
What a great informative website you have made here. We are planning a 2026 trip to Tokyo with a side trip to Kyoto (with possible stay in Osaka per your info here). Our traveling tribe will consist of @ 5 or 6 family members to include our adult children and spouses. I wondered what your thoughts were about using airbnb in Tokyo? We are definitely planning a Yomuri Giants game and our sked will revolve around that.
Was stationed with the Navy in Japan (Kamiseya/Atsugi) back in the 80’s and can’t wait to see the changes. Will subscribe to your newsletter and thank you for all your hard work putting this first class website together!

Hi Mike,
Thanks for reaching out, and super glad to hear about your Japan travel plans! Airbnb in Tokyo: we’ve had some great experiences, some bad (overpriced, too far from stations). There are some spacious options (and cheaper) in the Taito City area (try around Ueno or just north/west of it). I try to look for somewhere within an easy 5-10 minute walk to a major station so transfers aren’t too annoying.
I don’t know if you saw on my other (main) blog, but we also went to a Yomiuri Giants baseball game at Tokyo Dome (link to blog) and had a BLAST. It was soo much fun.
I hope you enjoy!! Thanks so much again for reading the blog. If you have other questions, feel free to ask! I’m happy you found my Japan site! x
